The singer also said his longtime guitarist John Frusciante left, Klinghoffer was the "only choice" to replace him, speaking to MTV News Canada.

Asked about how the band had responded to Frusciante's departure, Kiedis said: "Yeah, you know, we're a new band. Thank goodness. It seemed to be - whether we liked it or not, the right time for that change to take place. It's so exciting when you get thrown a curveball by the universe and you turn that curveball into a home run, and I feel like that is what happened."

Kiedis said the band through an extensive audition process and drafting a new guitarist to come to, revealing one for the role but can not think of Klinghoffer.

He said, He was the only choice. A lot of it had to do with the fact that he was our friend, it's just rare that you have someone who is right there and completely over-qualified for the job. That combination doesn't happen every day, to ignore it would have been stupid and it felt really good to call your friend and asking if he wants to play music, as opposed going to a stranger and asking them that.
